What is a HEIC file?
Since iOS 11, iPhones and iPads save photos as HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) by default. HEIC files are about half the size of JPGs at the same quality, but many Windows PCs, older Android phones, online forms and printing services can't open them. Converting to JPG makes the photo work everywhere, and at 90% quality you won't see a difference.
The HEIC decoder (an open-source library, about 1.3 MB) downloads only the first time you open a HEIC file. After that everything runs locally, so your photos are never uploaded. Live Photos are converted to their still image.
Stop your iPhone from saving HEIC
Go to Settings → Camera → Formats and choose Most Compatible. New photos are then saved as JPG. To keep HEIC on the phone but send JPG when sharing, use Settings → Photos → Transfer to Mac or PC → Automatic.
